Discovery of true friends

Discovery of true friends
Syracuse is a city in Sicily. Long year ago it was famous for its poet's and painters. Once it was ruled by a cruel king called Dionysius.
Dionysius was an able man.People say that earlie he used to work in an office and then by his cleverness became the chief of the army. Soon he became the ruler of the city of Syracuse. During his reign the city state became rich. But the people remained unhappy.
Dionysius did not trust anyone. He suspected everyone to be his enemy. He felt that some of the poets and painter of his court and some of the men in his army were against him. He was suspicious of his own friends and he put some of them to death for no fault of theirs. Everyone said that he was a cruel ruler.
Many stories are told about Dionysius ' cruelty. A barber once said that he had the king's life in his hands, so the king put the barber death.
Dionysius wrote some poems and thought he was a great poet. These poems were read by a wise man called Philoxenus. He observed that the king was not a good poet. So, the king put him in the prison. After some time Dionysius wrote another poem and called the Philoxenus out of the prison to hear it. Philoxenus read the poem to the prisoner and expected appreciation for the king. But he turned towards the soldiers and said, "Carry me back to the prison. "
Dionysius laughed and said, "Go home, Philoxenus. You are free. "He now knew that the wise man was an honest man, and not one of his enemies.

At that time there lived in Syracuse two young man Damon and Pythias. They were very good friends and lived like real brother. Once the king heard that Pythias was calling him a cruel ruler. He ordered his men to bring Pythias before him.
"I find that you are my enemy, so you shall die, "said the king to Pythias.
Turning towards his soldiers, the king said, "take the young man away and kill him. "
But Pythias wanted to see his old ailing father before his death. So he begged the king, "Give me two weeks. I will see my father and come back. Then you can put me to death. "
Dionysius did not believe the young man's words. He laughed and said, "Do you think that I am a fool? "
Pythias begged him again,"Have pity on me! You can trust me. I have never broken my word. "
"Put a man in your place and then go, " Dionysius asked the Pythias. "I will grant you two weeks 'parola. Will anyone take your place? "

Damon now came and said, "I will take his place. "
"Remember that you'll be put to death in his place if he doesn't care to back, "said the king to Damon.
"Pythias will come back in less than two weeks. I am sure, "Damon said.

Damon was taken to prison and Pythias went home. He saw his father, said goodbye to him and started back for Syracuse at once. On the way he was caught in a storm and was not able to travel for a couple of days Sadly he said to himself, "I am getting late. The two week's time will soon be over and my friend Damon will die. How can I save him now? How may I keep my word ? " But luckily someone gave him a horse and he rode back very fast.

Two weeks passed. The last day dawned but Pythias did not appear. The king went to the prison and asked Damon, "Where is your friend? Do you still think he will come back? "
"I am sure he will return, "Damon replied." He is only late.Perhaps there may be some accident. But I don't want him to retune, I want to die in his place and save his life. "
"Then get ready to die, "said Dionysius. He gave a signal to his soldiers to take away the Damon and put him to death.
ut just then Pythias arrived. He rushed in and said to Dionysius, "Here I am. Let Damon be freed. "
Turning to Damon, Pythias said, "Thank you, my very true friend. Go home and live a happy life. Only don't forget  that you had a friend called Pythias. "
"But I don't want to go home, " Damon said to Pythias "My life will not be happy without you. I did not want you to come back today. I wanted to die in your place and save your life. "
Dionysius was struck by the deep love of the two friends for each other.
"But I don't want either of you to die, "the king now said. "Your deep love has moved my heart. I wantI want you both to be my friends from today. You are both free. "
