Why does the fish die when it is taken out of the water?

The fish is an aquatic creature, it performs respiration through gills. The gills extract the carbon dioxide gas by absorbing dissolved oxygen in the water. Respiratory activity stops when the fish is taken out of the water for a while, so it dies.
